Project Description:
The Village of Ilion, located on the Mohawk River and Erie Canal, will develop a Comprehensive Plan and Local Waterfront Revitalization Program that will establish a community vision for the waterfront, downtown, and adjacent neighborhoods. The Comprehensive Plan and LWRP will work together to guide future growth and development, enhance waterfront access, revitalize downtown, improve river-related tourism, and celebrate the Village’s Canal and industrial heritage.
The Village has approximately 1.75 miles of shoreline along the River and Canal. The primary waterfront issues to be addressed by the Village in the LWRP have been identified as prioritizing projects that advance long-term community revitalization goals to benefit all residents, private businesses, and public entities within the Village. Initiatives include the following:
- Enhancing physical and visual public waterfront access/opportunities through traditional and alternative transportation improvements;
- Supporting downtown revitalization through streetscape enhancements and form-based codes;
- Improving the ability of the community to take advantage of river-related tourism through appropriate development; and
- Protecting the Village’s character as a factory community through code updates and encouraging restoration and preservation of historic structures.
